Established in 1964, the Saudi 2 channel (also known as the Saudi TV Channel and KSA2) is part of the Saudi TV television group owned by the Saudi Arabian government. A general entertainment channel entirely in English and intended primarily for expatriates and foreigners working in the country, Saudi 2 provides a varied schedule of programmes. National and international news, current affairs and entertainment are the priority of the channel, which caters to Saudi Arabia’s foreign population. In line with its remit, the station’s TV shows in English are markedly different from the majority of Saudi programmes aimed at native viewers.
Alongside many similar channels like Al Saudiya, Al Ekhbariya and Al Riyadiyah, Saudi 2 broadcasts the top news stories in Saudi Arabia. TV shows to do with cultural events, sports and economic also play an important part in the schedules of this free satellite channel, which employs many reporters and journalists not only around the country but also throughout the Middle East and even in the United Kingdom.
In 2007 Saudi 2 updated its format and is now running 24 hours a day, enabling it to compete with the many rolling news channels from the Middle East and elsewhere being shown in Saudi Arabia. Thanks to Saudi 2, expatriates and English speaking foreigners working in the country have a general channel that informs them about current affairs while also entertaining them with TV shows more suited to Western tastes.
