Jordan TV is a service operated by the Jordan Radio and Television Corporation (JRTV), the national broadcaster of Jordan, created in 1985 from the merger of the state radio and television networks. The mission of the Jordan TV channel is to provide quality television programmes throughout Jordanian territory.
The goals of Jordan TV have been stated as promoting dialogue and opinions, spreading Jordan’s message across the world and covering current events in a way that is independent, transparent and neutral while affirming the broadcaster’s loyalty to the King of Jordan. The channel was broadcast for the first time in 1968, becoming a full active member of the European Broadcasting Union two years later. In 1972, Jordan TV became the first broadcaster in the region to launch a second channel, Channel 2, specialising in the transmission of foreign programmes, including news presentations in English. Later in the decade it began broadcasting French news bulletins and programmes. The year 1993 saw the launch of the Jordan Satellite Channel, and five years later the broadcaster introduced a third channel devoted to televising parliamentary sessions and sports shows featuring both local and international events.
In 2001, the company experienced a broad restructuring that saw the first channels merged into a single unit. Channel 2 specialises in sports broadcasting, while Channel 3 was developed in cooperation with the private sector, dividing its programs between the ‘Cartoon Channel’ for kids in the morning and afternoon and the ‘Jordan Movie Channel’ in the evening.
