Al Magharibia was launched on December 16th of 2011 by Maghrebi businessmen. Founded in the context of the Arab Spring, it was created to provide a place for free expression on political, economic and social issues and events. Whilst based in London the private channel is primarily aimed at the Maghreb countries and particularly at viewers in Algeria, consequently some 50 to 60% of its programmes are devoted to Algeria. The Al Magharibia line is resolutely one of opposition. Among the offered programmes some are oriented toward religious issues such as DiNonA (Our Religion), or medical concerns, for example Sihatek Labas (Your Health is Fine). Although a television channel, Al Magharibia offers a schedule focused more on political and ideological debate. This is particularly the case with the daily news programme, Al Hadath (The Event), filmed in the presence of a live guest news commentator, either present in the studio or linked in by telephone. If you are an addict of information, you will be delighted to know that Al Magharibia broadcasts two other magazines, Taghtiya Khasa (Special Coverage) and Qalat Asohof (The Media Said). In many programmes, Al Magharibia calls on the public for their opinions and contributions. But it is especially Sada Acharii (Echo of the Street) which has won the greatest success. The show deals with burning social and political issues by giving viewers the opportunity to intervene. The dossier on unemployed demonstrations in cities in southern Algeria has had a resounding impact.
