One of the most historic German TV channels. ZDF was established in 1963 and is now the most watched general channel in Germany. Its content is diverse – with a wide range of information, education and entertainment programs for the whole family. Indeed, ZDF explicitly targets its programming to the widest possible audience. The German public channel offers a collection of diverse and varied programs devoted to news, culture, history, natural science, cinema and TV movie. The TV news show „heute“ broadcast every day at 19:00 is an iconic ZDF program, but ZDF viewers also appreciate its other news based flagship programs such as „heute-journal“, „ZDF-Morgenmagazin“, „ZDF-Mittagsmagazin“, „drehscheibe“, „heute in Europa“ or „heute+“.
Entertainment in the broadest sense forms a large section of the ZDF schedule of programs. You can see news, documentaries, political talk, movies, TV movies, series and shows. If entertainment, culture and information constitute the majority of the program schedule of ZDF, their sporting schedule is also alive and well including broadcast rights for example to UEFA Champions League, international soccer matches, athletics, tennis and winter sports.
Thanks to the Hotbird satellite, ZDF is no longer viewed only by German residents in Germany but can also be seen all over Europe, Asia Minor, North Africa or the Middle East.
