Yemen TV sur

Yemen has a total of three public television channels, one of which is Yemen TV, the country’s flagship broadcaster. First established in 1975 this was the first channel to ever bring a local media presence into what used to be called the Yemen Arabic Republic, sometimes known as North Yemen. In the aftermath of the country’s unification, it became a national network and now addresses the entire Yemeni population. Based in Sana’a, Yemen TV is an Arabic language station.

The stations output is varied, with a schedule that includes plenty of Arabic interest shows, these may take the form of news programs, documentaries on topics that affect the region, religious broadcasts and other programs that relate to life and culture in Yemen. Viewers can also catch regular shows that focus on the work of certain professionals and officials. These are usually the police force, the military, government employees and the head of state. Yemen TV is considered the main source of news for people who live in the region and keeps them informed on world events.

The channel has often been affected by unrest in the area; in January 2015 it split into two separate factions as a result of being seized by the local Houthis movement and the director resigned his post. A year later, the station’s new director and his family were killed in an air strike. Shortly after, one of the station’s camera men was also killed.

Yemen TV became a satellite channel in 1995 and can be accessed through Hot Bird.
