Algeria 4 – also widely referred to as Tamazight TV – was launched in March 2009 by the Algerian National Television Company (ENTV). In a country known for its multiculturalism and plurality of spoken tongues, Algeria 4’s public service mission is to promote everything to do with Central Atlas Tamazight, one of the most widely spoken of all the Berber languages. All of its programmes are broadcast in this tongue, including its Chenoui, Mozabite, Tamashek, Chaoui and Kabyle versions.
In pursuance of its cultural and social remit, Algeria 4 broadcasts daily from 5:00 p.m. to 11:00 pm. and offers a fairly diverse schedule of programmes. The latter comprise, in the first place, live newscasts that bring viewers national and international headlines in real time. The remainder of the schedules are filled out with an interesting selection of cultural fare such as concerts and musical shows in the Chaabi, M’zab, Tuareg, Kabyle and Chaoui dialects, as well as socio-cultural and sports programmes. For younger viewers, Algeria 4 also offers talk shows on issues relating to young people, as well as cartoons in Tamazight for children. Documentaries on literature, travel, history and local crafts are also part of the daily programming of this educational and socially conscious channel. But it’s not all serious, as Algeria 4 also shows plenty of serials and movies in the local language to the delight of lovers of good TV drama.
